High School Catch-up

Thought I would update a few high school games during the past week or two. MC Elite Gold is certainly proud of what our players have accomplished and eagerly await following their next exploits....

Willis 5, Huntsville 4

Jaycee Patrick had an eight inning base hit to give the Ladykats a two run lead at the time and enough room to pull off a 5-4 win over Huntsville.

The Ladykats move to 6-1 in District 18-4A play with the win and remain tied for first place.

“We were a little flat,” Willis coach Stephanie Shelly said. “I guess that was to be expected after our big win against Montgomery. We just didn’t play as well as we were capable of.”

Sarah Debrow got the win for Willis going the distance while striking out 12 batters.

Chloe Davis and Candace Luna both had two hits in the game.

Willis will return to action when the Ladykats travel to play West Tuesday at 7 p.m.

The Crosby softball team saved its best for last when it hosted Goose Creek Memorial Tuesday night. The Lady Cougars won 2-1 over the Lady Patriots, and scored both of their runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Pitcher Danielle Danek got the win for the night with 11 strikeouts and Taylor Core gets credit for the save.

Kristin Acrey had two doubles to center field to lead the team in hits.

Each team had four hits on the night.

The first run of the night was scored in the top of the third inning by the Lady Patriots after Abby Bogie doubled to center and tagged up two batters later to earn the team’s first run, and take a 1-0 lead.

Going into the bottom of the sixth inning, Crosby coach Karen Tallant told her team, “It’s now or never.”

That’s where the Lady Cougars came alive.

Becky Guillory singled, then stole second before Reneshia Shepherd’s single brought Guillory home to tie the game up 1-1.

A double from Hayley Alexander brought Shepherd home to take the 2-1 lead.

“That was a big hit by Hayley” Tallant said. “She was getting impatient and I think she was due a big play like that.”

As for waiting until the last inning to score, Tallant said that’s nothing she hasn’t seen from her team before.

“We did that same exact thing Friday against Kingwood Park,” she said.

The Lady Cougars stand in first place in district 19-4A with an overall record of 14-3 and a district record of 7-0 and the Lady Patriots now hold a record of 4-3 in district play.

“This was a big win and we knew it was going to be a tough game,” Tallant said. “We can’t let anybody sneak up on us, but whenever you’re in first place, everybody wants to beat you so they can say they took down the top dog. We just have to find ways to scratch in some wins.

Katy Adair who went all five innings, striking out 10 and walking one. Jill Loukanis took the loss for Waller (0-8 in district).

At the plate Ariel Hovis had a big night, going 3 for 3 with a solo homer, her first of the season, two doubles and five RBI. Also for the Lady Bulldogs, Victoria Birdwell was 2 for 3 with a double, Courtney Kuehn was 1 for 3 with a double, Reggie Harrison was 2 for 4 with a double and three RBI, Adair was 2 for 4 with an RBI, Kassi Mushinski was 1 for 3 with a triple and two RBI, Kaci Hoskins was 1 for 2 and Kendra Sancet 1 for 2 with a double.

The No. 7 state-ranked Willis Ladykats moved to 7-1 in 18-4A play with a 5-4 victory at Magnolia West Tuesday night.

Sarah Debrow got the victory.

The Ladykats scored a run in the first when Katelyn Bates singled, moved to second on an error, was sacrificed by Baylie Wilson and scored on Rachel McCrary’s fielder’s choice.

Willis added three in the second when McCrary had a two-RBI double and Chloe Davis an RBI-single after Ambyr Willhoite, Bates and Wilson had all singled.

The Ladykats scored their final run in the fifth on Jacie Patrick’s RBI single after Candace Luna’s double.

“We were lucky to get out of there with a win,” Willis coach Stephanie Shelly said. “Magnolia West hit the ball really well. At this point we’ll take any win we can get. We’ve done a great job in the first half of district. We just need to finish.”

The high state ranking is the first for Willis.

“It’s a great honor,” Shelly said. “We’ve never been there before. Now we’ll find out what we’re made of. We’ll have a target. Everybody will be gunning for us now. That’s fine. We need to step up. If we’re going to be ranked that high we need to play like that.”

No. 25 state-ranked Magnolia, 6-2 in district, is at Willis Thursday at 7 p.m.

THE WOODLANDS def. CONROE

The Woodlands Lady Highlanders remain undefeated (8-0) in district play and move to 25-1 over all after defeating Conroe 11-1 Tuesday.

Liz Arana led TWHS at the plate with a homerun. Faith Bohack, Jessica Snyder and Kayla Prater each had one double.

Paige McDuffee, tossing a one-hitter, picked up the win on the mound while Meghan Depugh took the loss for Conroe.

“We’ve always played real close games with Conroe,” TWHS coach Richard Jorgensen said. “The last game was 2-1 at our place. We just came out hitting the ball really well. The last three games we’ve run-ruled our opponents. All the girls are hitting the ball really well.”

The Woodlands will play at Lufkin at 6 p.m. Thursday.

WILLIS – A new bout of confidence seemed to accompany a new state ranking for the Willis Ladykats as they defeated the No. 25 state-ranked Magnolia Lady Bulldogs Friday night.

The No. 7 state-ranked Ladykats, 8-1 in league play, shut out Magnolia 4-0 at home. At their last meeting earlier in district play Magnolia defeated Willis 2-0, giving the Ladykats their only loss thus far in district.

“We felt like we had something to prove tonight,” Willis head coach Stephanie Shelly said. “A lot of good things are happening for us and winning tonight was definitely one of our goals.”

The Ladykats set the game’s pace in the first inning allowing only four Magnolia batters to hit in the top of the inning and scoring in the bottom off a solo homer by Willis shortstop Rachel McCrary.

Winning pitcher Sarah Debrow put a serious damper on the Magnolia offense, allowing only three hits with nine strikeouts.

Magnolia had a chance to put runs on the board in the top of the third after a bunt by Courtney Kuehn followed by a double from Ariel Hovis that put runners in scoring position. However, the last batter was unable to get a clutch hit.

While the Lady Bulldogs remained scoreless, the Ladykats’ bats came to life again in the bottom of the third.

Right fielder Baylie Wilson started the inning with a single to short and was batted around to second on a sacrifice bunt by McCrary. Chloe Davis muscled a double to center field putting runners on second and third. Catcher Candace Luna followed suit with a double, plating Wilson and Davis to give Willis a 3-0 lead. A single by Patty Wolfe drove in pinch runner Ambyr Willhoite for what would be the final run scored in the game, giving Willis the 4-0 win.

“This was really a team effort.” Shelly said. “We had great pitching, great hitting and great timing. The girls stayed relaxed and didn’t let hype about the ranking get to their heads.”

The Ladykats will host Caney Creek in their next district matchup at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

The Conroe Tigerettes handed New Caney just its second 14-5A loss Thursday night, knocking off the Lady Eagles 1-0 on the road on Brittany Medina’s two-out RBI-single in the seventh inning.

Christy Dowdy held New Caney scoreless, going all seven innings and allowing five hits, while striking out three. Ariel Kellogg took the loss, going 6 2/3 innings and striking out two.

“The girls came out really focused,” CHS coach Rachel Whatley said. “We got runners on every inning. We just couldn’t get them across the plate. I’m very proud of my girls for coming out and playing hard and playing to win.”

Conroe got the game’s lone run in the top of the seventh. After Amber Ortiz walked and Dowdy singled, Medina came through with the eventual game-winner.

For the game, Medina was 2 for 4 with an RBI, while New Caney’s Lydia Tanner doubled.

Conroe hosts College Park Tuesday, while New Caney is at The Woodlands. Both games start at 6 p.m.

On the adjacent diamond at THS the Tomball softball team was putting together its own stellar first-half run. Though they experienced their first District 13-5A loss, 4-3 in nine innings at Klein, the Lady Cougars started 7-0 in league play and were in position to regain their district title.

Tomball, which was 14-6 after April 1, was in good form early beating Klein 9-4 at home March 3. The Lady Cougars followed with four consecutive district shutouts, routing Westfield, defending district champion Klein Oak, Klein Forest and Dekaney by a combined 55-0.

Tomball recovered from a rough stay at the HSSL Tournament in Missouri City to reel off five straight league wins. The Lady Cougars flexed their offensive muscle, led by power hitters Kelsey Vincent and Renada Davis, and found pitching depth with Michelle Quinn behind ace Shelby Lancaster.

The Lady Cougars were also successful in their “Paint the Yark Pink” night March 26, not only in their 7-6 win against Spring. Tomball coach Benita Dunlavy said the game and surrounding events raised more than $6,000 for breast cancer research, with more to come. April 7 and May 18 mark “Nights out at Chili’s,” during which 10 percent of each ticket that presents a flier will be donated.

For the Lady Cougars the fun could continue on the field as well.
